For over three decades, NID has stood at the heart of Namibia’s civil society building an inclusive, transparent, and participatory democracy, one citizen at a time.

The Namibia Institute for Democracy (NID) is a non-profit organisation established in 1991 to promote civic education and enhance citizen participation in Namibia’s democratic landscape. Operating under Section 21 of the 2008 Societies Act, NID has been a key partner in civil society for over three decades, working to strengthen democratic governance, civic participation, and institutional accountability. Over the years, NID has built strong partnerships with national and international development actors, enhancing its mandate and expanding its impact across Namibia.

Guided by its vision of an inclusive, transparent, and participatory democracy, NID empowers citizens, civil society organisations, and public institutions through innovative programs and evidence-based advocacy.

Our Mission

NID’s mission is to empower citizens, civil society, and public institutions through civic education and governance training, support for transparent and credible electoral processes, and the promotion of human rights and democratic participation. We further strengthen democratic governance by facilitating evidence-based policy dialogue and building the capacity of community actors to engage meaningfully in public life.

The NID is loyal to the Constitution of the Republic of Namibia, the State and its institutions. The NID zealously guards its political neutrality and objectivity. The NID is committed to the well being of the citizens of the Republic of Namibia and the promotion of the Republic of Namibia as a democratic state.

NID is Founded

Established as a non-profit dedicated to civic education and strengthening citizen participation in Namibia's young democracy.

2008

Formal Recognition Under the Societies Act

NID formalises its status as a registered non-profit under Section 21, reinforcing its role as a trusted, independent civil society partner.

CIVIC+264

Co-Founding CIVIC+264

NID becomes a co-founder of CIVIC+264, expanding its impact through collaborative civil society networks focused on transparency and citizen engagement.

Launching Namibia Fact Check

NID launches Namibia Fact Check, verifying public statements and media reports to strengthen accountability and informed citizenship.
